Bangladesh: After the death of student leader Sharif Usman Hadi, the situation in Bangladesh is continuously worsening. Incidents of violence, arson, and vandalism have been reported in different areas. In this series, very shocking news came from Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila, where an innocent girl was burnt alive during the violence. According to local media reports, on Saturday, the house of a BNP leader was locked from the outside and set on fire. In this incident, the girl died on the spot, while three other people were seriously burnt.
On December 12, Sharif Usman Hadi was shot in the head by masked assailants during an election campaign in Dhaka's Bijoynagar area. When his condition became critical, he was taken to Singapore for treatment, but he died during treatment on Thursday. Hadi, 32, was buried next to the mausoleum of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam near the Dhaka University Mosque on Saturday amid tight security.
As soon as the news of Hadi's death spread, demonstrations intensified in many cities of Bangladesh. Incidents of vandalism and attacks were recorded at many places. On Thursday, an incident of stone pelting at the residence of the Assistant Indian High Commissioner also came to light in Chattogram, due to which the situation became more tense.
Immediately after the funeral, Hadi's party, Inquilab Manch, issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the interim government. The party demanded that those responsible for Hadi's murder be immediately arrested. Thousands of people gathered at Dhaka's Shahbag intersection on Saturday afternoon, where party leaders issued a stern warning to the government after the funeral prayers.
Sharif Usman Hadi was considered the main face of the people's movement of July 2024. He was the spokesperson of Inquilab Manch and was known as a harsh critic of India. 32-year-old Hadi had recently announced that he will contest the 13th parliamentary election as an independent candidate from the Dhaka-8 seat.
Hadi's family has demanded a memorial to be built in Shahbag, because this is where the regime change movement began. The Yunus government has declared one day of state mourning on Hadi's death. In view of the situation, security arrangements have been tightened across Dhaka.
In view of the impact of violence in Bangladesh, the security of the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi has been increased. Delhi Police has deployed additional forces in and around the High Commission. Barricading has been done in the area, and intensive checking of incoming and outgoing vehicles is being done.
